The Telegram Channel Selling Fake Professional Certificates Using Our Client's Logo
September 30, 2024
Outcome
Operator identified; Telegram channel shut down; 400+ fraudulent certificates cataloged.
Background
A professional certification body discovered that fraudulent certificates bearing their logo, seal, and certificate numbers were being sold through a Telegram channel for $50-$200 each.
Investigation Methodology
- Channel Forensics: The Telegram channel's history, admin metadata, and user interactions were archived and analyzed.
- Certificate Analysis: Sample fraudulent certificates were compared against real certificates to identify the source of the templates and seals.
- Payment Trail: The channel accepted cryptocurrency payments. We traced the receiving wallets to identify the operator.
Key Findings
- The channel had been active for 14 months and had sold an estimated 400+ fake certificates.
- The certificate templates were created using high-resolution scans of a real certificate — likely obtained from a customer who shared their certificate publicly on LinkedIn.
- Cryptocurrency payments totaling 3.2 BTC (~$96,000) were traceable to a single exchange account.
Outcome
Telegram was provided with the evidence and removed the channel. The exchange was notified and froze the associated account. The certification body updated their verification system to prevent future counterfeiting. Total investigation time: 3 weeks.
