200 Fake Instagram Stores Selling Counterfeit Products Under Our Client's Brand
October 25, 2024
Outcome
Network of 200+ fake stores mapped; 187 accounts taken down; counterfeit supply chain identified.
Background
A luxury fashion brand noticed a surge in customer complaints about low-quality products. Investigation revealed customers were purchasing from fake Instagram stores that perfectly mimicked the brand's visual identity.
Investigation Methodology
- Network Discovery: Starting from 5 known fake accounts, we used follower graph analysis and content similarity matching to discover the full scope of the counterfeit network.
- Supply Chain Tracing: Payment links, shipping tracking numbers shared in comments, and seller communication patterns were analyzed to identify the counterfeit supply chain.
- Automation Detection: Account creation patterns, posting schedules, and engagement patterns were analyzed to determine the level of automation and the likely number of operators.
Key Findings
- The network comprised 212 fake Instagram accounts, managed by approximately 6 operators.
- All accounts used a templated approach: identical bio formatting, similar product photography styles, and shared WhatsApp business numbers for ordering.
- The counterfeit goods were shipped from 3 warehouses, identified through analysis of tracking numbers shared in customer DMs.
- Estimated revenue of the counterfeit operation: $1.4M over a 9-month period.
Outcome
187 accounts were successfully taken down through Instagram's IP/trademark reporting process. The supply chain intelligence was shared with the brand's legal team and customs enforcement. Total investigation time: 6 weeks.
