BumbleCatfishing & Scams
A Military Romance Scam Network Operating Across 5 Dating Apps
February 10, 2025
Outcome
Scam network of 85+ profiles dismantled; intelligence shared with Army CID and dating platforms.
Background
Multiple TraxinteL clients independently reported romance scams involving people claiming to be U.S. military service members deployed overseas. The scams followed identical patterns, suggesting a coordinated operation.
Investigation Methodology
- Photo Origin Analysis: We reverse-image searched all provided profile photos, identifying the real service members whose photos were stolen.
- Profile Network Mapping: Using shared phone numbers, messaging patterns, and linguistic signatures, we mapped connections between reported scam profiles.
- Financial Trail Analysis: Payment methods and receiving accounts across victims were analyzed for shared infrastructure.
Key Findings
- 85 fake dating profiles were identified across 5 major platforms, all using photos stolen from active-duty military members' public social media.
- All profiles were managed by a team of approximately 8-10 operators, based on linguistic analysis and activity timing patterns.
- The scam network had collected an estimated $650,000 from victims over a 12-month period.
Outcome
Intelligence was shared with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), all 5 dating platforms' trust teams, and the FBI's IC3. The real service members were notified about the misuse of their photos. Total investigation time: 6 weeks.
