Recovering a Minor from a Predatory Discord Server
January 8, 2025
Outcome
Predator identified and reported to NCMEC and FBI IC3; child safety intervention executed.
Background
Parents discovered concerning Discord messages between their 14-year-old and an unknown adult who was encouraging the child to meet in person. The parents contacted TraxIntel for urgent assistance.
Investigation Methodology
- Discord OSINT: We analyzed the predator's Discord profile, including server memberships, message history fragments, and linked accounts.
- Username Propagation: The predator's Discord username was traced across 15 other platforms, revealing a consistent pattern of targeting minors.
- IP Geolocation: Through legally obtained metadata from public-facing servers the predator moderated, we established a probable geographic location.
Key Findings
- The predator had active accounts on 7 platforms popular with minors, all using variations of the same username.
- Previous reports against the individual existed on 2 child safety databases.
- A candidate identity lead was documented through a gaming platform profile that exposed address context publicly because of a platform misconfiguration.
Outcome
All intelligence was immediately provided to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The family was given a safety briefing. This case was treated as highest priority with a 6-hour turnaround.
